Chinese Basketball: Yao Ming, China’s Most Famous Player, was born in 1989, the year of his debut in the National Basketball Association.
He played in China’s National Team for two seasons before retiring in 2010.
Yao’s career has seen him win a gold medal in the 2016 Olympics, the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and the 2010 Asian Games, among other accolades.
Yao was the youngest player in the history of the National Team, and played for China’s Beijing Ducks in the 2002 Beijing Olympics.
Yao is the last NBA player to be drafted by China, and was drafted with the sixth overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft.
Yao made his NBA debut with the Atlanta Hawks in 2008.
Yao, who had surgery in 2009 to repair a herniated disk, won the title of Chinese Basketball Association’s Most Valuable Player.
Yao won a gold Medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, and won two gold medals in Beijing’s 2008 Beijing Games, as well as two golds in Beijing in 2008 and 2010.
He has the most career assists in NBA history with 13, and has been named China’s “Most Valuable Male Athlete” for the past three years.
Yao also was one of the most highly-coveted players in NBA free agency, signing a $100 million contract with the Los Angeles Clippers with the team having no intention of using him in the future.
Yao led the Chinese Basketball League in scoring for the first three seasons of his career, averaging 18.9 points and 7.7 rebounds per game.
Yao played the last two seasons for the China Basketball Association in China.
He was drafted No. 1 overall by the New York Knicks in 2007, and went on to be one of NBA’s best players for the next seven seasons.
Yao signed with the Shanghai Sharks of the Chinese Super League in 2008, and made his professional debut for the Shanghai Ducks in 2012.
Yao appeared in four NBA games for the Sharks before retiring after the 2015-16 season.
Yao and Yao’s son, Yao Ming (also a Shanghai native), are the oldest NBA players and have a combined 15-and-a-half years of NBA experience.
Yao retired from the NBA in 2016, after a 13-year career in which he won six NBA titles, four MVP awards, and two NBA All-Star awards.
Yao had his career ended with a season-ending injury on March 12, 2018, after the Shanghai Rockets won the 2017 Chinese Basketball Federation Championship.
Yao received the 2017-18 NBA Gold Medal at Beijing Games and the 2018 World Championship in Russia, where he averaged 27.3 points and 10.3 rebounds.
Yao left China after the 2018-19 season, and spent some time in the United States before returning to China in 2020.
Yao became a popular basketball fan when he visited Shanghai for a basketball game in 2022.
Yao joined the Shanghai National Basketball Club as an assistant coach, and later was named coach of the Shanghai Monsters, an independent team.
Yao helped Shanghai win the 2017 China Basketball League championship, and became a coach for the Monsters.
Yao spent the last few years of his NBA career in Beijing.
He won the 2018 NBA Golden Role award for his work with the China National Basketball Team.
Yao has become a household name as a basketball player.
Yao Ming was inducted into the Chinese Football Hall of Fame in 2017, and he has been inducted in the Basketball Hall of Champions five times.
Yao competed in the NBA Finals for the Houston Rockets in 2018, and also represented China in the 2018 Asian Games.
Yao will also appear in the upcoming World Series of Basketball in 2020, as he and his family are visiting China for the Games.
The two were married in January 2019, and are expecting their first child, the first son born to the couple.
Yao said in 2018 that he hopes to eventually retire from the game.
He is the first NBA player from China to win the MVP award.
Yao added, “I will always cherish the moment.
The moment is not enough.
My dream is to win an NBA championship.
I will not quit until I achieve it.
But, in order to achieve my goal, I need to win more championships.”
Yao Ming will be in China for NBA All Star Weekend in 2020 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his arrival in China and the first game he played for the Chinese national team.
The NBA All Stars Game is scheduled for Feb. 13, 2021, at Madison Square Garden in New York.
Yao posted a photo of himself in his locker in Shanghai, and tweeted that he had received “good vibes” from Chinese fans.
Yao currently has an NBA record of 22,892 points and has made his way to the top of the NBA scoring leaderboard since his arrival from China in 1996.
