The world of anime is full of odd jobs for anime guys like Yoshinori Kitase, the head of the animation studio behind the popular Naruto series.
Kitase says he enjoys the challenges of animation, but it’s also a big opportunity for a man who was once a child.
“Animators have become so good at doing it that the whole industry has turned into an artform,” he told me.
“So it’s become a profession that you can’t get enough of.”
And Kitase has found that his work is a big part of the industry’s success.
He’s also made a lot of money from it.
In 2013, Kitase made $20 million in his lifetime.
The following year, he made $40 million.
It’s not just a matter of getting big salaries.
Kitases work is the reason anime companies are willing to give him so much money.
Kitas own his own studio, Studio Ghibli, which he also runs as a solo artist.
And, when it comes to anime, Kitas’ personal passion for anime is a huge part of his success.
“I’ve never had an anime career,” he said.
“As a kid I used to draw and I played video games, but I’ve always been an anime fan.
I’m just fascinated by anime.”
So, when I got the chance to do an anime job, I really wanted to be part of something special.
“But it was not easy.
I’d have to take a lot more time and I’d be in a different environment.
I couldn’t just work from home.
And it would be a challenge to get into a production company that was just like me.
I really needed to learn a lot.”
Kitases first anime job was with K-ON!
anime, which was the same studio he worked at at age seven.
The show was just starting to get a following and Kitases mother was worried about him being distracted by her son.
So she hired a tutor to help teach Kitase how to draw.
That tutor was his wife, Rika.
They were both professional animators, and their work was so good that they were hired as animation directors for the show.
KitASE’S FIRST ANIME DANCE (2007) Kitases first full-length anime movie was called The World of Arundel, which starred a young girl named Ariane.
Kitays mom thought the story of Ariane was “totally unrealistic” and that she would end up hating her own parents.
So the story was cut, but the series went on to make several anime movies.
After all, she said, “The main character is really pretty, and the characters have all the right personality traits.”
But Ariane’s parents didn’t approve of her being a “foolish little girl.”
She ended up in a hospital with a broken heart.
When Kitase arrived in Japan to start his animation career, he got into a bit of a fight with his parents.
He told his mother he was going to get his own animation job and told her he didn’t want her to go through what she went through.
“She was a big proponent of my work,” Kitase told me, “but she was also an outspoken, tough, self-centered woman.”
When his parents found out, they immediately left for Australia.
“My mom and dad were very angry,” Kitases said.
“I had to tell them I didn’t know how to work with them.
And my dad’s a very outspoken, hard-nosed man, and he said I’d better find a way to make this work.”
He was hired to work on an animated short film about a woman who accidentally kills her boyfriend, who then falls in love with her and then becomes her lover.
That short film was eventually released in Japan as The Story of a Friend.
In it, the man has a crush on the woman’s daughter, and she doesn’t believe her father was actually interested in her.
KitAS ANIMATION SCHOOL (2011) Kitase’s animation school was the first one he attended.
The students were not only amazing at drawing but also were gifted in music, theater, and writing.
“The students were the most talented I had ever met,” Kitas said.
So, he decided to start making his own films, starting with his own short film.
The film would eventually go on to win several awards and become a hit.
He says he learned a lot from his students, especially his teachers.
“When you’re a kid, your teacher is the best thing that ever happened to you,” he recalled.
“They taught me so much about how to make my own work.”
Kitases film career began to pick up in the late 2000s, when his wife and two young children moved to Tokyo to open a new animation studio.
“And then I got a job with a very large company,” Kitays said.
